The Fife Environment Trust (FET) was formed in 1997 as an independent non-profit making company to distribute landfill tax funds under the 1996 Landfill Tax Act which was the first ‘green tax’ introduced in the UK.
The Trust’s main role under these regulations was to provide a mechanism whereby locally generated landfill tax monies could be made available to fund a wide variety of environmental and community projects meeting the overall objectives of the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF), formerly called the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme (LTCS).
Due to landfill tax devolution, the UK Landfill Communities Fund now ceases to operate in Scotland. Within The Scottish Landfill Tax (Administration) Regulations 2015 is the provision for a Scottish Landfill Communities Fund (SLCF) effective as of 1st April 2015. Further information about the SLCF can be found on Revenue Scotland’s website. Revenue Scotland has overall responsibility for the regulation of the Scottish Landfill Communities Fund (SLCF) and has appointed the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) to carry out the regulatory function.
Now an Approved Body, FET is permitted to receive Scottish Landfill Communities Fund (SLCF) money from landfill operators and distribute this to eligible projects.
Fife Environment Trust is managed by an independent Board of Directors which includes Fife Council as the main contributor to the fund.
